Abstract
By presenting and analysing comparative models and various methods, theorists and practitioners of interpretation in Flanders and South Africa can learn from one another’s valuable experiences and derive such suggestions and strategies that may improve the practice of sign language in both countries. Topics concerning sign language interpreting in Flanders which may have wider repercussion and therefore be of interest to an international audience are the political and linguistic structures within which SLI operates in Flanders, the debate on Flemish-Belgian Sign Language versus Signed Dutch, institutes, curricula and research in sign language (interpreting) in Flanders, and organisations for the deaf, with special reference to sign language (interpreting).
