In this paper the translation method of the Rosetta project is explained and motivated. In a stepwise way various aspects of translation are unravelled. The general strategy is to view a translation system as being composed of an analysis part and a generation part connected by a transfer module, and to break down the latter in a systematic way. The authors do so by repeatdedly identifying tasks inside the transfer module, which can be moved as new modules, with well-defined interfaces, into the analysis and generation parts. Subsequently, it is shown how the use of compositional and isomorphic grammars can help to simplify the translation problem.
