Abstract

The present article on language-political implications provides an outline of the different subtexts of subtitling, looks into the dominance of Hollywood and the role of English, discusses the nature of subtitling and makes a comparison between dubbing and subtitling. Finally, the implications of subtitling are discussed. The author finds that subtitling is instrumental in: 1) improving reading skills; 2) boosting foreign language skills; 3) facilitating easy and cheap international program exchange; and 4) cementing the dominance of English.
