Abstract

Domestic factors better account for Japan's interest in machine translation than pressures related to international economic competition. At least continued eagerness to invest in MT cannot be ascribed to technical success in research and development. The present article reexamines some basic assumptions about the economic viability and social desirability of MT systems.
