The purpose of this paper is to present one aspect of information transfer applicable to MT, namely, the information added, lost or modified in translating the punctuation marks from the Source Language (SL) to the Target Language (TL). The efforts of Soviet linguists is significant in this areas. The author presents soms part from the work pulbished in Russian by M.V. Arapov. A similar work but on a smaller scale was done by the GAT team under the author's direction to facilitate parsing of sentences by breaking them down into kernel sentences. The punctuation marks in co-occurence with ceratin connecting words turned out to be useful in this respect. The Soviet effort attracted the author's attention because of tis attempt to llok a t the punctuation marks (PM) as a system consisting of a set of paired PM characterized by certain degrees of seniority and stability. When this analysis is applied to a pair of languages, it could add to the elegance and quality of MT. The examples are taken from Russian and English texts.
