Abstract

This paper covers a non-volitional subject sentence structure in English. This sentence structure is quite common in English, but does not exist in Japanese, and thus is very important not only for English-Japanese translation but also for Japanese-English translation. The description is based on upwards of 1,000 sample sentences collected by the author over a period of twenty years. Variations of expressions are also discussed. In this discussion, at first, a few Japanese example sentences are cited. Next the discussion focuses on whether or not variation in each example sentence results in enhancement of elegance of the sentence.
