Abstract

The professional translator-magician must excel in performing sleight-of-hand, and the bag of tricks inherent in his spellcraft must vary infinitely according to the infinite variety of his source text. Adverbials and conjunctives represent one of the most intensive tests of this magic in the creative movement fril German source to English target for a seamless, invisible transition to the English idiom. The intention of this paper is to illuminate some of the Teutonic-Saxon gloom surrounding the usage of adverbs and conjunctions in and of themselves by revealing how they affecxt English sentence structure and the style of the entire English document.
