Abstract

The paper presents, with suggestions for adaptation, one model for translation training at the college or university level. Developed by a foreign language department, this approach to translation training can be modified and adapted by other foreign language departments interested in developing a progam in translation training. This model provides a practical, career-oriented option within the liberal arts context at the unergraduate and graduate levels. Emphasis in the progam is on translation into English in the fields of international affairs, area studies, business, and journalism. This paper discusses a rationale for translation training in a foreign language department. It outlines the benefits to be derived by instituting a translation program as well as the major steps to be followed in program development. These include: evaluation of resources, particularly with regard to curriculum, suggestions for modifying already-existing courses, establishment of the program's focus and goals, and development of specialized translation courses to be incorporated into the curriculum of the department. This paper concludes with an overview of the specific program which demonstrates one foreign language department's approach to translation training.
