Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to examine the activities of the various groups involved during the period 1979-1988 in working towards a court interpreting system in British Columbia. It gives a brief overview of the first fully operational multi-lingual training program in Canada, established in Vancouver Community College in 1979. It exames the system of accreditation introduced by the Society for Translators and Interpreters of British Columbia (STIBC) in 1982, discusses the work of the Vancouver Community College Training Program and examines the course of action the Advisory Commity is pursuing
