Abstract
A generic tag is an aid to translation because of the role of genre in interpretation. We approach a news item from the local daily newspaprer with different expectations than we would if it were a text from a literary journal or an article on pharmacology. The present article discusses how genre can become a problem when the source text refers to another text by generic label; translating the label may involve factors of time, place, audience, intention and generic elements.
