Engelbert, Jo Anne. 1987. The side of meaning: the importance of consultation in literary translation. In Kummer, Karl, ed. Across the language gap. Medford: Learned Information. pp. 209–214.

Abstract

Contributions on poetic translation make little reference to the process by which the original text is read and understood. With respect to the translation of contemporary poetry, theoretical models rarely mention the role of consultation in this process. This paper illustrates various ways in which consultation can improve results, not only by correcting misreadings and supllying essential information but by enhancing the translator's comprehension of the poet's universe and its unique system of signigication.
