Abstract

The purpose of the workshop which provided the context for the exercises discussed in this article was to make interpreters aware of the need to develop the whole gamut of their linguistic skills. The practical exercise of reading off indicators provided a good starting point, illustrating how necessary it is for interpreters to have a heightened critical awareness to avoid misinterpretations based on incorrect assumptions. In this article, the importance of discourse analysis as a means of honing one’s linguistic interpreting skills is demonstrated.
