The existence of international relations with foreign communities generates communication exchanges and can involve the use of two or more languages. Its is clear that in the present context of international openness, the exchange of information between communities has become a key element for success. The exchange of information and the development of cross-national research projects often involve the presence of translation activity. Even to be informed about what is happening in other communities one needs to rely on the work of translators. Also, contact situations can be identified. They involve a need for communication between speakers of different languages and therefore the potential presence of language mediation activities. One of these situations is when there is a co-existence of several language groups within the same geographical space, who are sometimes unable to understand each other. Another situation is the existence of two or more official language communities sharing a single political state (e.g. Belgium or Switzerland).
