This paper examines theoretical problems involved in translating referential items (such as demonstratives, personal pronouns, etc.) from Russian into English. It describes systemic inconsistencies between L1 and L2 in this regard and offers practical "solutions" to several recurrent problems of particular difficulty, using an illustrative Russian text. Programmatic suggestions are offered for analyzing inter-language conflicts.
