Translation is regarded as one of the five basic requirements for the students of foreign languages in China. Great efforts have been made to improve the students' skills, though it is believed that not everyone of them can be trained to be a good translator. As a teacher of translation, the author introduces in this paper how translation is taught in her university, one of the key teacher-training universities under the direct administration of the State Education Commission of China. Theory is considered very important for its indispensable role in guiding practice. Special stress is laid on the difference between the two languages - Chinese and English. Basic techniques are taught through examples. It is with theories in mind that the students have various translation practice under the instruction of the teacher. The comparative study of different versions, the appreciation of good translation, and the teacher's comments on the students' exercises all help to improve their skill in translation.
