With the description of Strategies of Simultaneous Interpretation, a first-year course of interpretation at the Monterey Institute of International Studies, the author lays the groundwork for an empirical method of teaching simultaneous interpretation, based on concepts and strategies of skill training. This paper presents the premise of such a method and outlines the first-year course in conference interpreting for which the method was originally delveloped.
