Ever since people started communicating with each other, and between different societies and cultures, language has been developing. Since people from different cultures, countries and regions speak different languages, interpreting facilities were needed from the very beginning. In this chapter, the author discusses interpreting in ancient times and in the period of discoveries and explorations. She also discusses interpreting and the diffusion of religion, interpreters and diplomacy, the beginnings of modern interpreting, simultaneous interpreting, the Nuremberg trial, the post-war period, etc. The last subject brought up, is training and professional support.
