This contribution is about quality in interpreting, about quality of the performance. After a brief introduction, the author analyses the nature and the functions of interpreting (interpreting as a service, as communication, as an interlinguistic activity, as an intercultural activity, as a production of texts). He also identifies the need for quality and as a consequence the need to determine criteria for good interpreting performances. The criteria discussed are: equivalence, accuracy and adequacy.
