South Africa finds itself in a very peculiar situation regarding interpreting. The tremendous changes that have taken place in South Africa have also impacted on the whole interpreting profession in the country. Although these changes have created many exciting challenges and opportunities in the field of interpreting, they have also led to many dilemmas that need to be faced. This paper aims to give an overview of the needs and challenges regarding the training of interpreters in South Africa.
