Abstract

The work of the interpreter and the translator goes far back into the ages and has existed ever since people with differing languages first communicated with one another in the spoken or written word. Naturally little is known of the earliest history of the profession, but from ancient Egypt we do know a certain amount about the position of interpreters and the indispensability of polyglots. The author uses the example of the Bible to illustrate the history of translation.
