Abstract

From September 1985 to September 1988, research was done into the possibilities of machine translation (MT) as part of a scientific research project at the University of Njmegen. It was based on the studies carried out at this university since 1970 which dealt with automated parsing of Duch and automated semantic analysis of Dutch. The software that resulted from this research, the so-called AMAZON-CASUS line, allows for semantic analysis of a subset of Dutch sentences, in which construction as the passive, topicalization, verb clusters, coordination, extraposition, and WH-movement can be analyzed adequately. In this paper attention is paid to the AMAZON-CASUSline, the linguistic techniques in TRANSIT and the translation algorithm specifically developed for TRANSIT.
