Abstract

In the present article the 'freedom' of a translator is discussed. The author provides a definition of a translater's 'freedom', distinguishing between two fundamental meanings of the word 'free': 1) someone can be free from something and 2) someone can be free to do something. Next, the author tackles a number of paradoxes of free translation.
