Abstract

The article proposes to show the dominance of foreign and translated plays in Brazil as from the time the theatre was introduced by European colonizers, and how this has affected Brazilian playwriting throughout the centuries, moulding the work of writers and the preferences of their public. It also reveals the dilemma faced by researchers when writing their histories to determine what is translation and what is original in the development of theatre in Brazil.
