The present article describes the audiovisual situation on Finnish television, discussing the origins of translation for this particular field and examining the choice of subtitling as the dominant mode of translation. Next the author discusses the type of transfer in relation to the type of programme and he concludes with an account of how translation is organised at the Finnish broadcasting company Yleisradio.
