In the Dutch audiovisual media everything can be watched in its original language with subtitles. The present article attempts to explain why they Dutch made such choice. The author discusses the audiovisual situation for different media such as television, films and video. Next the author looks into the transfer methodes, both in the past and the present. Finally the author looks into the professional status of subtitling, discussing the reception by the audience, translator training and working conditions.
