The last couple of centuries have put orthodox interpreters under pressure to show rigor and objectivity in biblical interpretation. Such pressure may come from Roman-catholic interpretation, from historical—critical interpretation, or from comparisons with the rigor, exactitude and objectivity in modern science. But very often rigor only increases by subtly ignoring or minimizing messy complexities. In this article the author thinks about complexity and richness in meaning.
