Abstract

The author discusses the business of translating sacred texts as an important contribution of the development of conditioning elements of contemporary consciousness. Sacred texts have a special character, defined on the one hand by their relationship to each other, on the other by their distinction from non-sacred texts. The author calls for reflection on the motives for getting into the business of what he considers to be a profoundly serious trade.
