Abstract

The author offers an analysis of the limitations upon translators of religious texts. She discusses the translation of (Orthodox) liturgy and compares three translations which all differ in terms of their degree of archaising and/or modernising, concluding that the translation strategy is governed, to a large extent, by the intended purpose of the translation and by the translator's audience design.
