Abstract
The present article looks at the role of English as a European lingua franca. The following issues are discussed: the linguistic hegemony or linguistic imperialism of English, the development of English as a means of international communication, the need for non-mother speakers to communicate and translate into a language that is not their own, the decline in interest among European students in the study of modern languages and the issue of defining lnternational English.
