Abstract

The present article examines what happens when a Germanic, analytic language like English meets a non-Indo-European, Finno-Ugric synthetic language such as Finnish. The authors do not only explore the different types of linguistic and cultural contacts - the head-on linguistic collisions when the two tongues get tied - but alos mention some of the ingenious clever, creative collusions that occur when English and Finnish mix. The authors address the issue of how Finnish might actually influence global English by looking at the transformation of English within Finland, note the varieties of English that are used in that country and discuss the worries English predominance evokes.
