Abstract

In the present article the author reflects on what occurs when we translate. What facilitates it? What obstructs it? How much of the process seems to be within our conscious control? The author suggests that translation processing can be divided into three steps: 1) the comprehension of the source material in language 1; 2) the transfer of this comprehension to language 2; and 3) the expression of this comprehension in generally comparable target-language material.
