Abstract

The theory behind opera translation is easily stated: translate the libretto so as to preserve the drama, poetry, and music of the original. This article tries to formulate an answer to the question whether opera should be translated at all and discusses three verbal aspects of a libretto which affect the music, being rhyme, sound and repetition.
