The central thesis of this article is that a translator can greatly overestimate how much the target-language will understand and that the best way to avoid misunderstanding is to check the translation with several speakers of the target-language. To support this thesis, the auhor comments on the results of some research. First, however, he considers some underlying theoretical persuppositions.
