Abstract

Many MT experts would agree that translator involvement in the building of MT dictionaries is one of, if not the, most important key to the succesful growth of a system in a given setting. The in-house translator, if the works on the dictionaries and is also the posteditor, is in the best position to observe the syetm's performance and to know how the entries should be coded and glossed in particular contexts. Furthermore, he is motivated to improve the dictionaries, because each improvement helps to make his own future work easier. The Logos Corporation has given special attention the development of effective tools for use by their MT customers in tailoring the vendor-supplied dictionary to meet specific needs. In this article the author writes about how the translator employs the Logos-developed dictionary software, including two interactive programs, Alex and his sister Semantha.
