Abstract

Ívens saga (Yvain), one of the translations made in the 13th century in Norway on the orders of king Hákon the Old, reached us in an abridged version. It is, however, clear that the stripping of the text in comparison to the original is partly due to the written tradition. Research into the history of the Norwegian Yvain has surprisingly brought to light a number of changes in an primary stage by a connoisseur or someone with undeniable respect for the text. As it is clear that the Knight of the Lion existed in Norwegian in an unabridged translation, we can also suppose the earlier existence of an abridged version of that same translation.
