Abstract

The author discusses the need for and theory behind a monolingual and thus fairly unorthodox course in consecutive interpreting which was set up in 1972/1973 to fit the needs of a major user of interpreting services. He uses the example of this course to discuss the significance of understanding in the interpretation process on the basis of this course.
