Abstract

In this article the author explores some of the problems that have characterized Indian literature for a significant portion of modern Indian literary history. Why is it difficult for knowledge of Indian writers to transcend state boundaries despite the fact that translation is taking place? To address this question, the author examines how both ideological concerns, pertaining to the choice of a 'representative ' target or link language, and concrete issues inform the current practice of translation in India.
