Abstract
In all forms of interpreting understanding is paramount and in understanding speech, background knowledge is as important as command of language. The broader the cognitive complements, the less ambiguity and polysemy there is in language, and the more thoroughly speech is understood. The author discusses difficulties on the level of syntax, prepositions, the number of words used, and verbal, situational and cognitive context when interpreting between English and French.
