This article offers a first-hand testimony abut the early history of the emergent subdiscipline of Descriptive Translation Studies in the Low Countries. It discusses the role of institutional context, including tensions between established disciplines and administrative structures (e.g. theoretical versus comparative approaches to literature; Romance versus Germanic philology)
