The article deals with the relationship between translation, culture and communication. First, the problems of defining 'translation' are discussed. The article then looks at cultures as semiotic systems and the role of natural languages in them, intra-cultural versus inter-cultural communication and the perception of otherness, translation as a necessary but problematic aspect of inter-cultural communication, and the relations between cultures in their historical and ideological contexts.
