Abstract
In this article the translation problems presented by 'culture', seen as the repository of a diverse range of verbal and non-verbal signs, is dealt with in terms of a distinction between socio-cultural entities (products of socio-economic, geopolitical or scientific and technological forces and institutions) and textual practices (the linguistic means of representing these products, legitimating tem or in some way concretising them in actual texts).
