An interdisciplinary empirical research into translation processes carried out by the Copenhagen Business School, focusing on the mental translation process rather than on the translation result, has shown that attention and supervision are prerequisites in order for intercultural communication and translation processes to be successful. The research dealt with the reasons for mistakes in translation. It was assumed that problems were not always due to a poor knowledge of the foreign language or a lack in skill. Experiments with a large test group brought to light other interferences, such as attention to detail, assurance, comfort, arrogance, doubt, cognitive overload, preferences. The discovery and awareness of these interferences are prerequisites for efficient changes in translation didactics. Insights from psychology, sociology, cognition and methodical approaches from other disciplines also play a role in better understanding the complexity of the translation process.
