Abstract

This work aims to provide an historical overview of the role of translators throughout time. It looks into this role on the basis of nine main themes: for instance, translators as inventors of alphabets, their influence on national languages, makers of national literature, disseminators of knowledge and religion, dictionary makers and vectors of culture, in other words, privileged witnesses of history.
