Abstract

This article looks at the various ways of translating English X + V + -ing compound adjectives into French. The differences between English and French in terms of word-formation patterns are highly relevant to this class of compound adjectives, as evidenced by the range of equivalents represented in bilingual dictionaries. A quantitative and qualitative contrastive analysis of a bi-directional parallel corpus of journalistic and literary texts confirms the existence of regular patterns in translation strategies. It also offers insights into certain genre-specific uses of these compound adjectives and highlights their distinctive role as markers of point of view.
