Abstract
This article aims to analyse the way the compound adjective was translated within a corpus of three translations of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter (1850). It appears that this particular aspect of the text and of Hawthorne’s style has been somewhat neglected. The handling of the compound adjective by both the author and the translators raises a set of stylistic as well as cultural questions. The article suggests a number of solutions for translating compound adjectives in this particular novel as well as when translating English into French in general.
