Abstract

Translating metaphorical adjectival compounds in Wilde’s novel implies taking into account the text as a whole and the intertextual and metatextual references which provide keys to their interpretation as they appear throughout the text. The study focusses on adjectival compounds of colour and those inspired by natural or floral elements and shows how the two French translators had to make repeated choices between the most literal repetitions and creativity.
