Abstract

Identifying a foreign work from its French title is often a difficult task because the translation of this important element of the book's 'paratext' must take into account various cultural and commercial criteria. This paper, based on the French titles of a number of British books, aims at showing how the cultural references of the original title are often modified or even suppressed in order to ensure a good reception for the translated work in the target culture.
