Abstract
First the general characteristics of subtitling that distinguish it from other types of language transfer ; the standards for the form and format of presentation adopted by the industry; and a series of factors in the process by which viewers read the subtitles are reviewed. After that the article focuses more narrowly on two specific translation operations: condensing the text and dividing the subtitles into blocks. These latter two operations are seen as constituting the crux of the task, and as the key to successful film translation in this mode. Finally, the article briefly sketches some of the more important problems that arise from inserting written texts on the screen and when translating film titles.
