In 1999 the Chamber of Deputies inaugurated the Sala del Mappamondo, or Map Room, previously a dust-filled reference library for parliamentarians now equipped with a system destined to revolutionise the traditional mono-direction of conference procedures. The new, multidimensional equipment also means a new role for the interpreter; when the exchange of information is more complex, it can end up, paradoxically, being impeded rather than improved by simultaneous interpretation.
