Abstract

The paper examines a number of translatorly strategies in the English subtitles of six recent Italian films, all box-office successes in Great Britain, with particular attention to types of humour. These examples of ingenious linguistic and technical solutions go a long way towards debunking the negative myth of the ‘voicide' perpetrated by subtitles which distract from performance skills and reduce linguistic same.
